Inductions with Acupuncture
Have you gotten to that 40 week mark and your doctor wants to medically induce you?
Or are you booked in for a stretch and sweep and not too excited about it? These are common procedures done when you are full term. Did you know that only 2% of babies are born on the due date at 40 weeks? The majority of births fall 2 weeks either side of that. The due date has been calculated as roughly in the middle.
Trying to get the body to do something it’s not ready to do is more likely to cause further medical intervention.. Why is this so? Medical inductions promote labour by using a synthetic hormone Oxytocin. This hormone is produced during sex and also by your baby to let your body know it’s ready to come out. Research has shown that during those last few weeks the mother is passing vital immune defences ( anti-bodies ) onto her newborn while the babies lungs are developing. When the babies lungs are developed is is thought that they are somehow involved in sending the message for your body to go into labour. This starts contractions in the uterus and gets the cervix to dilate. This process naturally happens over a few weeks preparing you for birth. With the synthetic version of this hormone this all happens within a couple of hours. Not a pleasant experience and the labour is often hard to get a handle on. Often women that get inductions will request an epidural.
